Most of you appreciated my last article and asked me to give more insight on getting a mentor since it is challenging to get one. Today I will share some information that will be helpful in finding a mentor.

To begin with, we often fail to recognize mentors when we encounter them. This might apply to you. You might have encountered various individuals who could have been potential mentors but failed to utilize the chance because it may not have been a priority. I want to share with you how to avoid this so that the next time you meet and talk to someone, you will recognize how helpful they might be in mentoring you for anything.

Ask better questions

Everyone around you can be a mentor, do you believe it? Yes, it is true. Every extraordinary individual you have in your life can be your mentor. I say this because everyone has something they can do well and, if treated right, can share their knowledge. That does not mean you should start writing to everyone, asking them to be your mentor. The real question is, what are you willing to learn? Once you know the skill you want to acquire or perfect, you will point out people around you that do it better than you. Those can be people who do it better, faster, and with greater ease.

Mentorship is not a unidirectional relationship. This is another thing we all neglect, yet it is crucial. We feel that a mentor should do all the teaching, and we do the learning. Mentorship should be a bidirectional relationship. You might think that whoever you want to make your mentor has nothing they can learn from you, but you might find yourself with more to offer than you may imagine. You just have to get it in you.

Mentor yourself - be cognizant of your existing network.

Another point is that make yourself known to everyone within your network. The more people within your network know about you and your capabilities, the higher your potential to get yourself a mentor. If you want a mentor, begin by mentoring yourself. This helps because, ultimately, whoever decides to be your mentor will recognize that you have the zeal for whatever knowledge you hope to attain from them, and it will encourage them.
